OPERATION PLAYGROUND
Design and Technologies
This resource will address the context of designing a new playground area for the school, the schools current playground is showing signs of wear and has been deemed unsafe for use. The school has begun the process for the installation of a new playground and would like to provide opportunities for student input into this process. Students will explore playground design occupations and how people in those roles meet competing factors such as sustainability to meet the needs of the community for current and future use. Students will need to consider the materials used within the playground looking at recycling and reusing to support sustainability. The resource; Operation Playground will contain task sheets with supporting digital stimulus. The resource will provide opportunities for students to demonstrate what they already know and find answers to what they want to know. Students will use the process of reflection to support their continued learning throughout the task providing reinforcement of new learning and a direction of where to go next.

Knowledge and Understanding:
Examine how people in design and technologies occupations address competing considerations, including sustainability in the design of products, services, and environments for current and future use (ACTDEK019) Processes and Production Skills: Critique needs or opportunities for designing, and investigate materials, components, tools, equipment and processes to achieve intended designed solutions (ACTDEP024) The design and technologies curriculum, knowledge and understanding descriptor requires students to examine design and technologies occupations and how differing considerations, including sustainability impact the processes undertaken within these occupations. The complementary descriptor will support student’s processes and skills while they investigate and critique the materials, equipment and processes needed to reach designed solutions to the posed problem. Cross Curriculum Priorities Sustainability: evaluating the sustainability implications of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment, for example materials can be recycled or re-used to reduce waste; systems may benefit some, but disadvantage others. |
